About
Sophie Mahon is a socially engaged artist and producer. Her interdisciplinary practice combines film, sculpture, and digital experimentation to create installations, artworks, and events.
Sophie’s work addresses a range of social, political, economic, educational, and environmental issues, particularly as these climates become increasingly unstable.
Ideas are explored and developed through action research and working closely and collaboratively with communities and people working in other sectors, from schools and scientists to mental health and youth workers. Resulting works are often interactive, participatory and shown in public spaces; aiming to function as a platform for engagement.
Sophie has worked across the UK and internationally with various groups and communities and with organisations, including the Whitworth (Manchester), Heart of Glass (St Helens) In-Situ (Lancashire), British Ceramics Biennial (Stoke), Gus Fisher Gallery (Auckland), Tate Modern (London), The Grundy Art Gallery (Blackpool), Backlit Gallery and Nottingham Contemporary (Nottingham). Sophie was awarded the Futures Venture Radical Arts Award in 2017 for her work as one-third of The Next Term collective.
Alongside her artistic practice, Sophie is currently working with In-Situ Pendle, developing programs and partnerships around Arts and Ecology and with Open Eye Gallery in her role as Head of Social Practice.
